Washington, D.C. – Tibetan, Uighur and Chinese activists will hold a press conference and portrait action in front of the White House on Wednesday, September 16th from 12:00pm – 1:00pm in preparation for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first official state visit to the U.S., expected to be September 24-25th. The activists are calling on President Obama to publicly call on Xi Jinping to halt the crackdown on Tibetans and Uighurs, and civil society in China.
What: Press Conference & Portrait Action
When: Wednesday, September 16, 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Where: Pennsylvania Ave, in front of the White House (Lafayette Square) in Washington
The press conference will start at 12:00pm. Speakers will include Geshe Nyima, cousin of revered social activist, Tenzin Delek Rinpoche, who died in prison in China on July 12, 2015; Alim A. Seytoff, President of Uyghur American Association (UAA); Yang Jianli, President, Initiatives for China; and Pema Yoko, Acting Executive Director, Students for a Free Tibet.
The portrait action will take place at 12:30pm. Dozens of Tibetan, Chinese, Uighur and American activists plan to hold portraits and silhouette images representing hundreds of victims of Beijing’s campaign of escalating repression in Tibet, China and East Turkestan (also known as China, including 143 Tibetan self-immolations, 250+ targeted Chinese lawyers and rights activists and more than 40 Uyghur political prisoners.
